You should average 48 hours per week.

The Working Time Directive also covers how long a break should be left bewteen shifts and what rest breaks you're entitled to during.

Take a look at the following link for further information:

It depend on how old you are.

If you're in the UK and under 18 it's a max of 40 hours I believe, over 18 is 48 hours but, unlike the rest of the EU, you can opt out of the 48 hour rule in the UK. You can also choose to opt back in to the 48 hour rule though. If you're under 18 you can't opt out.
These are all per week.

So, if your over 18 yes quite legal.

If I work this back - it means that on an average 5 day week you work 9.5 hour/day. Your company possibly only pays you for 9Hr per day as the 30 min lunch break is not paid for? so in legal systems you work 45hrs per week - that is legal in the UK. What you need to find out is what is the standard official working day hours in your company and make sure if it says it is 40hrs per week - you get compensated for the extra hours.

The absolute maximum is 48 hours in any seven day period. Your employers are well and truly breaking the Health and Safety Laws by making their staff work so meny hours.

Only if you get paid accordingly. In the construction industry it is quite normal to work a 60 hour week or even more for key people.

What hours are you contracted to work for and have you signed the 48hour thingy to say your willing to work more than 48 hours a week.
Find these things out then ask your union or ACAS for advice.

In reality, there is no limit to the number of hours you can work in England. Most employers take advantage of this.

If you do not like it , leave.

(Most European countries have maximum hour legislation, but there are always ways to circumnent the law).
