I am looking to name my next son Giovanni. His brother is Maximillian . A bit of history, I am from Croatia and my wife is American, but born in Germany and has an Italian father. Her maiden name was Italiano.

So with I am looking at naming our 5th and last kid Giovanni. I am 6'2" blonde and feel these names may be a good name to grow into.

Without any doubt it's very nice name! Basically in the form you put it is Italian version of the same name that in German version would be Johan, in American (English) - John, and in Croatian – Ivan.
A question - What would be the name most similar for all 4 versions (German, American, Italian and Croatian)? - crosses my mind!

Assuming that you live in America a name Marc or Mark pop up to me (Also may be Marco and Marcus). So, if you go to see your relatives in Germany it wouldn't be strange to them as they use similar name in form of Marco and Markus. As well if you go to Italy they use Marco, and Croatian version would be Marko. More or less the name is pronounced everywhere almost the same. If you want some relation with some famous person, world great traveler and adventurer Marco Polo crosses my mind. BTW he was born on Island Korcula in Croatia.

Consider this, just as my thought, and name your son the way you would like to call him! And, whatever name you are going to choose, I'm sure you would shower him with love and care!

CONGRATULATIONS to you, your wife and his brothers and sisters!

I like the name Giovanni but, it depends on your last name. I also imagine Giovanni to have dark hair. I can't picture a blonde blue-eyed Giovanni. Maybe it's because I live in an area with a huge Italian population....

Her maiden name was Italiano? Seriously?

I really don't like the name Giovanni. It will no doubt be shortened to "Gio" by his friends...and that name just wreaks of "greasy Italian".

There is nothing wrong with Italian names...but why not go with some Italian-lite names vs. full fledged hardcore heart of Italy...I'm assuming you live in the States...you son will also.

Giovanni is nice.. are you okay with people shortening it to just "Joe"? That's most likely what will happen.

I think it will be a good name for your son. It matches up well with his brother's name too.
