I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and say that 188 is a typo error.
Some states have the max number of hours you can work a day but there are a lot exceptions to that.
They are called critical occupation fields. Such as Doctors, nurses, firemen, police officers. And maintenance personnel. If you are in one of those fields it is from can to can't. Spend many a week working straight through during start ups of new lines.
Worked until couldn't go any more grab couple hours on shop table then went again.
Saw your additiional info: 188 hours a month is only 47 hours a week figuring on four weeks in the month. Yeah that is legal even the DOT haul law allows 70 hours in eight days for truckers and locomotive engineers.

Where do you get the extra 20 hours? There are only 168 hours in a week, so not only are you going round the clock, you've got a clock that gives you 20 extra hours a week...maybe sell the 20 extra hours (or the means for creating them) and you won't have to work any longer.
Later: OK, month. Sorry for being a smart-a s s. So that's about 28 hours a month, or 7 hours a week, or an hour to an hour and a half per day overtime you should be paid. The amount of time isn't excessive, IF you're fairly compensated for it. Your state labor board/bureau should be able to tell you what the law is on overtime compensation.

It depend on how old you are and where you are.
If you're in the UK and under 18 it's a max of 40 hours I believe, over 18 is 48 hours but, unlike the rest of the EU, you can opt out of the 48 hour rule in the UK. You can also choose to opt back in to the 48 hour rule though. If you're under 18 you can't opt out.
These are all per week.

It's law now that an employer needs you're approval if you are to work more than 40 hours a week.
However, if 47 hours a week is in your contract then I'm afriad thats the job.

188/4 is 47 hours per week i think. i think by law you the max the employer can make you work is 48 hours per week. anything extra then its your personal choice and you can refuse to do so if you wish.

Doesn't sound like it. You can only work excessive hours if you have agreed upon that and even then you're supposed to get 150% or more. specifics depend on which country and or state you live in.
Check out the department of labor website at http://www.dol.gov, specifically,
http://www.dol.gov/esa/regs/compliance/whd/whdfs23.htm
Also, look at your employment contract, you'll remember it probably said 40 hours.
Also, look at your state website
Good luck!
