Actually, the Harry Potter series is for anyone that enjoys that type of reading, not just little kids. Besides I would be extremely surprised to find a seven-eight year old reading a book with around 700 pages to it!!
I'm 34 and my father is 56 and we have both read the entire series. Now as for watching the movies, that's an entirely different question.

Just because the book's subject involves fairies, spells, wizards, and the genre is basically fantasy, it doesn't mean that the book is only and only for kids. You should look farther than the simple surface and see beyond the stereotypes. If you analyze the context, the plot of the book and the general scheme of the story, you'll notice that it's much more mature than you think and it deals with certain subjects that kids wouldn't exactly understand. Plus the way those subjects are expressed requires a higher level of intelligence.
And your roommate sounds like one of those guys who think reading in general is 'geeky'... Ugh. Never mind him. Enjoy the books! ^^
Oh, and if you need to convince your roommate that adults enjoy HP, too, all you need to do is ask on Y!A if any adults do. I personally know a lot of grown ups who are incredibly fond of this story.

No it's not solely for kids. I think it's most suitable for Highschool and college kids, They can truely understand the story and the age of the characters (Book 6) are aroung 17. When it comes to Book 4, 5 and 6, there's a big part about growing up in the story. In fact, anyone who'd like to have some fantasy in their lives would enjoy these books. They provide some imagination and more colours in our lives.

J. K. Rowling says herself that it is a children's book and calls herself a childrens author. However, I think that it just depends on who you are and what you like. Im 24 and Ive been reading them since they started when I was still in high school. I've even gotten others hooked on them. My boyfriend (26)and his sister (30) both love them, and are planning on going with me this time to wait in line at the bookstore for their own copies of the 7th. I dont think its about age, though very small children would have trouble grasping some of it. Its very detailed and well written. Above all its a mystery, and all ages love a good mystery.

It is not a book for just anyone. People of all ages read it! I've been to Harry Potter sites where people write their thoughts about the books, and the ages ranged through about 8-30! A lot of people enjoy the series, and it is meant for anyone to read.

No, in fact some of the later books can be terrifying for little kids. I was watching the Prisoner of Azkaban(less scary than the book) and the kid I was babysitting(a seven year old) was really scared. So it's not just of kids , it's more for teens but everyone can read it if they want too.

It's marketed towards children, but I think the author was just writing it for everyone. I'm in my 20s and I love it. I don't know what I'm going to do when the last book comes out and all the the mysteries are solved. It's entertaining enough for childeren and easy to read, but the themes are pretty heavy. The issues in the book mirror real-life topics like racism, AIDS, terrorism, and broken homes. While young children enjoy reading these books for the adventure I think they'll enjoy reading them thoughout their lives as they come to understand the world around them, and find a deeper understanding of the content.

Harry Potter is a book for all ages. But I personally think that teens could possibly feel it better. I was a kid when I read it but I recommend the others to read it when they are over 12.
All ages can enjoy it. Trust me.

Harry Potter was labeled as a children's book when it first came out, but even then it was for older children, maybe middle school. However, I'm 26 and I read it and a few of my friends read it and I've had plenty of coworkers of all ages read it. The writing isn't ridiculously difficult or anything but the stories are good, most of the time.

Harry Potter is a good book for all ages. I really enjoy the movies and I am 21. The movies are really interesting and have pretty good graphics. I know kids that watch em and I know 50 year old men (my dad *lol*) that watch em. But I guess it just depends on what kind genres youre into
