10x^2 - 23x +12 = 0
(5x-4)(2x-3) = 0
x = 0.8 or 1.5

10x^2-23x+12=0
sum=-23
product=120
splitting the middle term such that the sum=-23 and the
product is 120, -23=(-15)+(-8) and 120=(-15)(-8
10x^2-15x-8x+12=0
taking out the common factor
5x(2x-3)-4(2x-3)=0
(2x-3)(5x-4)=0
if the productis zero each productcan be zero
equation 2x-3=0 2x=3 or x=3/2
5x-4=0 5x=4 or x=4/5
so the solutionset={3/2,4/5)

10x² - 23x +12 = 0
(2x - 3)(5x - 4) = 0
2x - 3 = 0 or 5x - 4 = 0
x = 3/2 or x = 4/5

10x^2 - 23x + 12 = 0
10x^2 - 15x - 8x + 12 = 0
5x (2x - 3) - 4 (2x - 3) = 0
(5x - 4)(2x - 3) =0
5x -4 = 0 ...... x = 4/5
or
2x - 3 = 0 ........ x = 3/2

The most straightforward way to solve this is by the quadratic formula.

x = [-b +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)]/2a

x = [23 +/- sqrt(529 - 4(10)(12))]/20
x = [23 +/- sqrt(529 -480)]/20
x = [23 +/- sqrt(49)]/20
x = [23 +/- 7]/20
x = (23 + 7)/20 or (23 - 7)/20
x = 30/20 or 16/20
x = 3/2 or 4/5

2006-12-14 18:55:45 · answer #5 · answered by Puggy 7 · 1 0

(5x-4)(2x-3) = 0

5x-4 = 0 |OR| 2x-3 = 0
5x = 4 | 2x = 3
x = 4/5 | x = 3/2
= 0.8 | = 1.5

so x = {4/5, 3/2}
