Hello,
I am getting my son a acoustic guitar for Christmas.
We have seen one he might like.
Its an Ibanez V72E(in black), it says got a onboard tuner!

This means nothing to me! Im musically challenged!!
Are guitars ok with on board tuners? Any benefits or negatives from on board tuner?

My son is only 9 but been playing for year and a half (outgrown smaller acoustic guitar)
Any input appreciated

It's a digital tuner that's built into the body of a guitar (this case an electro acoustic) it's to make tuning the guitar easier as and far as I can see there's no bad points too it.

I've been looking at them myself and have just bought my husband Stagg Electro Acoustic with on board tuner.

I looked at Ibanez and their website said to beware as there are some Ibanez rip-offs selling on auction sites that are a very reduced quality!

Yeah i used to be a musical instrument rep and i sold them. It's basically a guitar tuner built in to the body of the guitar (to tell you if the strings are in tune so that it will sound ok when played). The 6 guitar strings are tuned to the notes E,A,D,G,B,E' and this helps you to ensure they are properly tuned. The benefit really of this is, incase you leave your tuner behind or it gets lost. This won't happen as it's built into the guitar so you'll never lose it! He's a lucky guy if he's getting an Ibanez guitar for Christmas - they are really good guitars. It will come with instructions though on how to use the tuner, but they are really easy. There will be a green light on it when you pluck the appropriate string and will light up if it's in tune. If it's not in tune, usually a red light will come on to let you know it's not. Will be no problem! Ask in the music shop too if you're unsure - they will be able to help.

A built-in tuner is not necessary to have, but it's a nice bonus. No negatives, really.

The guitar is one of those musical instruments that has to be tuned every so often. The tension of the strings each have to be properly tightened or loosened by turning the pegs at the top, until the sound of the strings match a certain standard set of notes. Guitarists will either own their own electric tuner device they can plug into, or tune the strings by ear by comapring a note to a pitchfork a note on a keyboard, since these things don't really go out of tune. An electric tuner "listens" to a string you play and tells you to keep twisting the peg up or down until the note you hear is correct for that string.

An "on board" tuner means there's an electric tuner built right into the guitar, so that if your son needs to tune his guitar, he doesn't have to plug into anything else or tune the notes off of another instrument. So, it makes things more convenient. If he already has his own tuner, no biggie. The guitar is still a good model even if you don't use that special feature.

Well yes, an on board tuner would be pretty handy and when your learning it is important to be in tune else nothings going to sound very nice and you'll never get any where. That said when I was learning I was denied any sort of tuner apart from a pitch fork (which just gives one note of one string and you then have to use your ear to tune the rest of the guitar) Although this was a pain I came to realise it was invaluble to me not to have a tuner because it dramatically improved my ear and though tuning was a night mare at first I have reaped the benafits in that I can tune a guitar pretty close to pitch with nothing now (which friends who have always used tuners can't do) and generally have a better ear which is important in music for all sorts of reasons. Anyway, my advise, get the tuner but just always try tuning your guitar with out it first and use it to check and clean up.

It's not necessary: Don't pick that particular one just because it has the tuner. There is something to be said for learning to tune up unaided - it helps your "musical ear".
