It depends on your living situation, really. If you want something to cuddle with but the animal would be left at home most of the day, cats are sweet and independent. If you are active and someone would be around most of the time, a dog would be a fun new family member. "Pocket pets" such as rabbits and other small rodents are not very needy, they're usually happy just hanging out in the cage most of the time but the bedding needs to be changed frequently unless you want it stinking up your home. Same goes for birds, unless it's an exotic parrot like an African Grey - they need LOTS of attention. Reptiles can be especially low-maintenance, although some will only eat if their food arrives alive. Do plenty of research and if you find something you might like to have at home, keep the animal's best interest in mind too.

Pet Rats.
With rats you have the antics, and the behaviors of a rodent, a dog, a cat, a three year old child, and a monkey, all wrapped up a furry little body.
We in the Fancy call them "palm dogs". Rats are very personable, that is they love to be around their humans and they interact with us like a cat, or a dog would.
Rats are easy to care for and can be trained to use a litter box.
A couple of rats would give you hours of entertainment.

It's plain and simple...a cat...They are loving and loyal and cuddly...but yet you don't have to take them out at 2 in the morning so they can dig a hole in the back yard. LOL If you have been pet free for awhile i would suggest fish...the are low maintenance and cost efficient and fit down the toilet :-) Good luck and happy pet hunting!!!

it depends on whether or not you live in town or out in the country. i live in the country and i have two horses that is what i think is the best pet because they are a comfort to have around when you need them. they are also a great pleasure to ride.

A snake. Easy to care for and you can leave home for a few days and not worry about them as long as you have a secure enclosure and they have plenty of fresh water. Only need to be fed once every week or two, depending on the species.

I personally love cats but I don't think that makes them better in general or better pets for a certain person.
