Complicated question. Some ideas/observations.
#1. Get more school. The more skills you possess (specifically targeted preferrably) the more you will earn. Get used to the fact that you will need to learn forever to get ahead/stay ahead in our information based economy.
Ideas for now... if you can handle physically difficult work, these jobs will usually pay more.
Machining: if feel you understand and can fairly easily pick up on measuring and reading blueprints. CNC (computer numerically controlled) machining has caused a decrease in the need for formal schooling to be a machinist, wages are down, but more accessible to those who are uneducated but ready to learn.
Maybe some tech school training is another good way to quickly jump ahead without too much investment in time and money, you can then pay the bills and get more school later if you like.
Generally, be on the look out for oppurtunities. Check out help wanted ads regularly. Whatever job you're doing, do it well or get a different job, and do not burn bridges at any job you are leaving (it cannot benefit you and a good resume is valuable). And while your doing well, take the time to look for new oppurtunities. Read, learn, and if you feel you cannot do something, be realistic and ask yourself WHY. And then solve the WHY if it's something u would really want to do.
Be motivated. Think about what you can do with more money, more skills, etc etc. You will be working for a long time, you can hardly take it seriously enough, just don't let it scare you. Take calculated risks, try things you aren't sure you can do, and be ready to make mistakes and move on.
The public library is FREE and between it and the internet, there is little you cannot learn. Pick something you want to know more about, and do it over and over and over.
And, without making yourself feel helpless/useless, understand that at 18 yrs of age, you know very little compared to someone 10, 20, 30 years older than you. You may want to think about what they say and how it might be helpful to you.
Never stop learning. Never give up. =)

You can always get a job if you have your HS diploma or GED. It just depends on your interests. Look at the different classified ads in the newspaper or Yahoo! jobs. The job postings will usually indicate how much schooling is needed to apply. What I suggest though, is to try to further your education. Community colleges offer a lot of courses, and you can also get financial aid, so you don't have to worry about fees. Check your local community college and if they have one, get an appointment with their career counselor. You can also go back to your high school and see the career counselor there.
