you need to know what you want to create and how to go about creating it.
you need to know what a computer is and how to program in it (this includes understanding what the os is and stuff)
you need some knowledge in programming languages.
some software engg principles.

www.bloodshed.net has a free c++ compiler. Then go to www.cplusplus.com and use their tutorials. This is as real as it gets. Luckily for you, you don't need to know how to spell to be a programmer. You just need to be consistent with your errors. :P
