Camry 1998, leaking a dark fluid from the back part of the front hood on the passenger side. From what i can tell, it is not green, it does not smell, my oil level is fine, my coolant level is fine, my breaks work fine. It is accompanied with a burning-type smell when I am idling or if I have just stopped the car. Ideas? What am i leaking? is it expensive to fix?

it could be as simple as a gasket ring for your oil plug or it could be something cracked. there is no way for any of us on here to know what your problem is even with your great description because all car's parts are in different spots and there could be so many things it could be.

if i where you and cheap like me i would take it to a mechanic and see what he says. some mechanics are honest and if it is a cheap job, he is most likely honest. if it is expensive though don't be afraid to take your car to about two or three more shops. If this is a problem that will cost you hundreds of dollars and you have three or four price quotes chances are one will save you $50 or more dollars. $50 just for driving around for maybe two hours sounds like a good deal to me. Also, if you take it to a mechanic, he gives you a high quote, and then you say you're going to take it somewhere else or you have to think about it or something and they offer a cheaper price then definitely take it to a couple more spots. at worst, they're trying to cheat you and at best they give you the best of 3 or 4 offers and you can always go back to them in the end. good luck, i hate cars and some mechanics

This model was good for having a converter seal leak. When your in the car start it up put on the emergency break. Put the car in drive hold the brake pedal to the floor then put the gas to the floor. If the car wants to move just let off a little. . this brings up the rpms for the transmission pump and with the car in drive it lets the tranny spin. do this for about fifteen minutes. It will heat up the seal allowing it to mold itself back into shape. Allow the engine to cool for about an hour, then do it again. It should only take about four or five times to get it to seal.

I think you're leaking brake fluid. You can leak for quite a while before the brakes give out. It isn't expensive to fix, it's considered part of normal maintenance. Take it to a shop and get the brakes checked. Or you can just get a can of brake fluid and fill up the reservoir until you have time to get to a shop.

could be leaking automatic transmission fluid. Smells like varnish.
If your car is an automatic check the level on the dipstick whilst the engine is running in neutral at normal operating tempreture on level ground if its low add half a litre of A.t.F. Then check again . if there's no fluid ,or whats on the end is redish-brown,make an apointment whith your bank manager!

With your Front wheel Drive you need to get it up in the air or just take it to your local oil change Guys and ask them if you can look at it under the car...

2 things to look at, V6 or 4cyl.
Rear side of Valve cover Gasket seeping...
Power sterring rack, boot/seal on end or hose leaking getting fluid on engine...

Need to get it looked at... ASAP

Also on passenger side??? When was your timing belt replaced if 4cyl ? Back head on V6 front Seal?
The list could go on....

Best way to find where a leak is coming from, before you park your car in the garage, clean the floor so the next day you will see exactly where the leak is.Jack the car and have a look.

yes it won't be cheap but can be...power steering pump is in the area there but both trans & p/s fluids get burnt over time due to enormous pressures ,usage,& extreme heat they are subjected to and remember not only did that fluid leak out, but air leaked in but that's not so bad since the fluid is dirty already it needs to be replaced and since there's no symptoms it hasn't failed yet which will mean much dinero when it does so get it checked and check out cartalk.com,auto media.com & aaa.com

Dab the fluid with a white paper towel, and inspect the towel.

If the fluid is black, it's engine oil.
If the fluid is red, it's either transmission fluid or power steering fluid.
