A bit of both, if the story is good enough, a story is about the plot, not the ending. In fact in the original fairy tales they never end with happy endings. The fairy tales by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in the early 1800s was use to serve up life as generations of central Europeans knew it, impulsive and cruel. It is only when they saw how the tales effect on young readers, the Grimms brothers, and editors how follow them, started to change things. Tales slowly got softer, sweeter, and primly moral. Yet all the polishing never rubbed away the solid heart of the stories, now read and loved in more than 160 languages.

Happy endings don't always leave me feeling satisfied, though it really depends on the content of the book. Some happy endings are justified, but all books shouldn't end that way. Just ask the witch in snow white. hahaha.

happy endings happen only in fairy tales, real life stories end in varies degrees of happiness, sadness or tragedies. No such thing as, "they lived happily ever after".

Stories are stories! What ever ending, they must have substance, believable within their context.
