My cat likes to climb up into the tree and knock off the ornaments. I have an artificial tree so the branches are all messed up after he does it. It's very annoying and I can't get him to stop. I spray him with water when I see him doing it, but he usually does it when I'm gone. I would put all of the gifts I've bought under the tree, but he likes to tear up paper and he would just ruin those too. He's a pretty big punk, and most things don't work on him. Any suggestions? lol

I can't lock him up because I do that when I bring in groceries and I don't want him to see that as a punishment...

We took a circular piece of window screen netting and used twist ties to attach it to the bottom of the lowest branches. We have four cats, andd this keeps them out of the tree, and also serves to catch any ornaments if they happen to fall off their hooks or branches. As to keeping the whole thing intact while you are gone, buy a couple of cheap. lightweight, folding dressing screens. The ones about five feet tall that used to be used in dressing rooms to change behind. Open these up and enclose the tree display behind them so they go all the way around the tree. Use simple hasp locks to keep the two screens from separating. Decorate the screens with a wrap-around mural of christmas trees in a snowy meadow with a blue sky. Take it down and fold it up when you are there and store it conveniently behind a door or in a closet.

I have four cats and have always had cats. The best approach that has always worked for me to to take each cat, one at a time to the tree, show them the tree, take their paw and put it on an ornament, and then slap the paw and tell them "No." I then repeat it with the cords, branches and presents. I also keep an extra long yardstick (mine is 42 inches) near the tree to rap on the floor when they are getting too close or are under the tree. I have been able to minimize the number of broken ornaments to 3 last year, and as of this year we have no broken ornaments, no presents messed with, and cats who understand they are not supposed to do that!
Good luck!

I had a cat for 18 Christmas trees. I totally understand your dilema. A friend suggested lightly sprinkling cayenne pepper on/around the tree. It works like a charm because the cats hate the smell. We also used this outside a rental property where the cats were trying to move in under the porch. The pepper is the most humane way I know of to deter a cat from going somewhere. Best of luck.

right for you- we are the masters, suitable? nicely, perhaps the cats do no longer know that, yet in step with probability we are in a position to be a minimum of extra clever? I study each and all of the solutions, and multiple of them have been precise- attempt some. I even have 6 cats and each and each has desperate in spite of if or no longer they are involved in the Christmas tree. If desperate, they are going to get in it. We first tried putting very jingly embellishes on the tree, so as that ought to alert us to return shoo them away, yet that have been given annoying in the midst of the night. Later we tried attaching grotesque plastic grocery luggage to the decrease limbs, then aluminum foil- all of which they must have had a physically powerful snigger at. we've even tried the table acceptable theory- even nonetheless it relatively is particularly akward with a 6 foot tree! Now, years of Christmases later, we firmly base the tree so it would not tip over, placed breakable/priceless embellishes up bigger and extra securely linked. we've more suitable a touch annoying noise to yell whilst they attempt to tutor the tree right into a toy it relatively is something like, "Aaaannnn!!" a minimum of it distracts them and makes us think of as quickly as back we are the masters, no longer the cats. Merry Christmas!

Lock his butt in the bathroom every time he goes near the tree. and leave him there when you aren't at home. He will survive but will learn to stay away from the tree.

Put coins in a tin can, and shake it vigorously next to him whenever he does something naughty... it could work! (or bring a dog next to the tree, lol)
