A journal and a nice pen to write in it with.
Maybe a CD or a book that you think she will like.
Whatever you do dont buy her jewellery of any type, as this says "I want you back!!"

Your ex is very fortunate to have a friend in you. As you mention and others have said the real trick is to not mislead her. This is especially important if the breakup is recent.
My tuppence worth relies more on what you know about her than anything else.
If you can tie a book, sewing, art, or similar supplies to one of her interests, even a movie if not of the romantic sort, almost anything NOT saying "I romantically love you" will do.
And as you probably have, I would chuck the idea of a cheap t-shirt, or similar cheap thing directly in the nearest bin (funny though it is).
It is hard to be more creative without more specific information about her likes and dislikes, but I am willing to bet that you will find something that is quite appropriate.
Here's to a happy Christmas to all!

Don't bother, why get the poor gal's hopes up. That is if you really think she even want's you back. Just send her a Christmas card and leave it at that. Be friends, don't be friends with question marks.
