The "Dual Sport" category of motorcycles covers a very broad range of machines that are street legal, but still have some off-road or back-road capabilities...

The heavyweight dual-sports (1000cc+) are geared mostly for highway riding or adventure touring, with an occassional off-pavement run down a fire road or an established trail. This is where the big BMWs really shine, and where they are most popular with their R1200GS and GS Adventure models, but Triumph, Suzuki, KTM and even Buell make large dual-sport bikes that are nearly as good as BMW, and can be purchased for considerably less money.

Mid-weight dual-sports run from 600-800cc, and generally are lighter and more off-road capable. BMW is also represented in this group, with their F650GS, but Kawasaki, Honda, KTM and others are much more popular in this size, mainly because of cost.

In the light weight dual-sport category, (450cc and below) you will find bikes that are much more about off-road riding, and less about highway riding or adventure-touring. In fact, many of the bikes in this category are little more than Moto-Cross bikes with lights added on.

Which one is the best? Ask anyone who is riding one... He'll tell you that his is, or perhaps a newer model of the same brand. In the end, maybe they're all right! The one you're riding may be the best for you.

As PT Barnum once said... "You pays yer money and you makes yer choices..."

Tough question. I think BMW makes the best quality wise. I might get one, one of these days. But I can get a Kawasaki, Suzuki or Honda for quite a bit less (I have a Honda TransAlp now) and it'll still last a good long time.

BMW
They have an awesome duo purpose machine. Read the specs and be ready to fork serious cash. They may look 'funny', but they get the jobs done. The F650 GF is just one example.
