Find a quiet noise source near where you sleep -- plug your MP3 into one of those pillows with the built in speakers -- have some quiet (maybe classical) music on -- about an hour's worth to lull you into a sound sleep.

Find a small apartment near your home, and have your mother watch your toddler while you go to work. Now, take your time in looking for an apartment. Some have security gates. Second floor ones are also safer. Once you're out on your own, you'd be surprised how much your self esteem rises and you know you can take care of yourself. You can have a couple of phones, like one in the kitchen, living room and bedroom, calling 911 is easy to do. Have a safety chain on the door and a dead bolt. You can look into safely issues and living alone, you know to be aware, so you're already a step ahead. For a while you can call your mother every night until you feel comfortable. I think you'll do just fine. Just find the right apartment. If it doesn't work out, you can always go back home, but you'll probably like the privacy once you get out and the freedom. Lots of people in your shoes live by themselves and do just fine. Just always be aware. Ask your police department if they have a program for single women for self defense or awareness programs. Keep a cell phone handy when you go out. I think you'll do just fine.

First, you don't really say the kind of neighborhood that you live in, but let's assume that where you live is safe.

What is it that you are afraid of specifically? Once you figure out what exactly you're afraid of, then you can better deal with it .

Living alone is a unique experience if you have always lived all around other people like your family .. When you live alone, you tend to hear every single noise all round you, and you imagine things that aren't there. It is a natural response and not unexpected.

When you are alone, and there is no television going, the outside noises diminish, and these are the times when you hear things that you don't hear during the day. Those same noises occur all during the day, you just don't hear them, because they are masked under all the other noises .

You could possibly be one of those people that need some kind of racket like radio or TV or something you can hear to sooth your mind, until you go to sleep. My daughter is that way, she just needs to have some kind of noise and she is just fine and can sleep like a baby.

Sleep tight!!

Best advice I can give you (though definitely I agree with the Biblical advice) is to read Gavin De Becker's "The Gift of Fear" which will help you discern the difference between real fear and unhelpful worry that will diminish your capacity to realize and respond in case of an actual situation.

Second best advice I can give you -- Read Barry Glasner's "The Culture of Fear" Though crimes do happen, they are not nearly as prevelent and commonplace as the media would like us all to believe.

Also, see if you can find any other women in your area living alone. See if you can strike up friendships and a support/ watch out for each other system. I suppose if you find a really trustworthy guy, then you could also lean on him, but women usually are better off looking out for each other and getting help from each other.

Even though I do not live alone, I am often up during the night when everyone else is asleep in my house. I get scared too. I lock all the doors, close all the windows....even close my bedroom door. Watch tv, read a book, listen to the radio. And if Im ever walking around I usually carry my phone with me, lol...I feel safer knowing I have it.

Do what you can to make your home safe from intruders. If you have a cell phone, keep it on the charger beside you. Consider having a weapon.

You are also vulnerable when you are outside your home. Learn to be vigilant.

You should not be obsessively concerned with noises around you. When you jump at noises this may indicate a hyper "startle response". Have you been in a dangerous situation lately that may predispose you to post traumatic stress syndrome? If the problem interferes with your sleep or your ability to relax at home you should let your physician know.

Either watch TV or keep music on until youre sleepy enough to actually fall asleep. With the TV on, I don't really think about being afraid, cuz there're always something stupid or familar on. lol.

I have had that problem. I claim Psalms 91:11.For He will give His angels charge over you to keep you in all your ways.We don 't pray to angels but when we pray the scripture on behalf of ourselves or others,it mobilizes our angels. I imagine my pillow as Jesus's lap and I rest on Him. I pray to Him not to let fear overtake me.Take all the necessary precautions to be safe. Read a good book when you are trying to settle down for the night and with your mind off all that concerns you then you will drift off.Pray for a hedge of protection around your home and you.At some point, you have to be as safe as you can and just stop worrying all the time.

Get a dog or a cat. I don't really like cats, but the idea is that they make you feel comfortable in many cases.
