Feelings of sadness are usually related to an event or a loss and are transitory. In other words, you know why you are feeling sad and it doesn't last for months and months.
Depression usually lasts a long time or is chronic and occupies your every waking moment. Also, there are symptoms so you can diagnose depression, such as a loss of interest in things that you used to enjoy, or a change in your eating habits.
First check a web site that gives you information about depression to see if it fits how you feel. Second, there are people you can get counseling from who are connected with charities and will do it either for free or for a reduced amount. Third, check with your doctor because there are antidepressants now that really work.
I can't diagnose you over the Internet but there are sources you can check to see if you are really depressed or not. If you are depressed then you should get some kind of assistance because there there is no reason why you should spend your life feeling like it isn't worth living.

In my opinion, depression is a consistent sadness that doesn't necessarily need any real foundation.
Is there something specific making you sad that you can try to overcome, or is it more of a general feeling that won't go away? The latter might be depression. I know people say this all the time, but try not to dwell on unhappy thoughts.
There's no good reason to let yourself stay sad. :)
Also, alcohol is a depressant, using it will only make depression worse. Try to avoid it.

Usually depression is when you feel you don't want to eat, you feel hatred, you are insecure, and overly sensitive. depression is usually caused by a dceased family member, they way your loved ones are treating you and people in general. Sadness is when you cry and feel bad, but not as serious as depression, which can lead to other illnesses, such as anorexia and anxiety.

First, if it is depression, a drink will only make it worse. Your doctor can give you a real short test to tell you if it is depression. If it is, they can help. Good luck!

WELL FIRST OF ALL YOU DRINK SO THAT MAYBE ONE OF YOUR PROBLEMS. WHEN SOMEONE DRINKS OVER BOARD I THINK THAT IS THE FIRST SIGN OF DEPRESSION , THEY ARE TRYING TO GET AWAY FROM SOME PROBLEM.WHEN YOU ARE SAD TO THE POINT THAT IT WONT GO AWAY THAT IS DEPRESSION. IF YOU CANT AFFORD A THERAPIST YOU COULD GO TALK TO A MINISTER OR SOMEONE ELSE THAT BELIEVES IN JESUS CHRIST
