go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328874 to change the product id key
no information will be lost
you can call or order a new key on-line from microsoft for whatever it costs - say....doesn't the computer at work have a sticker with an xp key on it?

I've never used it, but in the path All Programs ---> Accessories ---> System Tools ---> you may see an option that reads "File and Settings Transfer Wizard." I'm not sure if it's used by copying data to CD/DVD or by making a connection from one computer to another with a network or other kind of cable, but it may be worth looking at.

what do you mean by may not be legal. u still have a doubt about it. just buy a new Xp CD from a authorised vendor. Save all data on to the drive other than where you are going to do a format. then install XP on the formatted drive.
