The car has been paid off, the engine was just replaced with a new engine as it was covered under the warranty as the original engine recently failed.

It is possible the car could have additional issues (outside of the engine) if I keep it as it is a 5 year old car, so does it make sense to trade it in now before other stuff may start to go wrong. Finances are currently tight, so I would be trading it in for a newer used car, hopefully more reliable. (this question is being posted for a friend of mine)

I would get rid of it while there is still value there. Once a car hits 100,000 miles, the value falls hard! Passats are very nice cars, but something was pretty messed up to lose the engine at 94,000 miles. Could be a lack of maintenance or the mechanic messed up something. VW motors are very strong, so something out of the ordinary had to happen and it may happen to other things on the car.

Your friend may want to look into getting a brand new car and bite the bullet and pay a little more in payments. If the old car breaks again, it may not be under warranty and you're not looking at minor costs to repair - also think of not making it to work, etc. Is it worth taking a chance?

Good luck!

The problem with VW's is they are very reliable cars but they need maintenance. It's not the kind of car that you don't do anything to like a Honda or a Toyota.

If your friend doesn't have time to pamper his VW, he's going to have this same thing happen!

Our VW is always getting maintenance but it has had no problems. Fluids have to get replaced and other things have to be changed... and these things often can be done here at the house with the VW book and some time.

My advice to your friend is to get in touch with his inner self and decide whether or not he wants to do what the car wants him to do or whether he wants not to have to bother with the car ever. Passats are cool *** cars but they must be pampered. I bet your friend has no time to bother with the car so he needs to get a Honda or Toyota.

its a new engine. one less thing to go wrong. if it does, it will be covered by the shop that put it in. Keep it. Upkeeping an older car is usually cheaper than getting a new car with payments and increased insurance and sometimes more expensive to register.

keep it
it's only 5 years old. Get your moneys worth with the engine. Keep up with regular maintenance and it should last you for a while.
