I work with this Mexican guy. He is very sweet and charming and around my age. He moved here only a year ago and so is still adjusting to the American culture. He is very touchy feely and will always grab, pinch or poke my sides, back and shoulders. He will even grab my legs when he bends down to get something. He will tell me that I am "bonita" and "sexy" and he says I am his best "amiga" in America. I feel comfortable around him despite his behavior, probably because I am so attracted to him. Of course I don't plan on acting on it because of our language barrier even though I do speak a good deal of Spanish. I also am saving myself for marriage, so no sexual relationship would be my intention anyways. Does anyone know why he acts this way and is this platonic behavior or is he just really touchy feely and that's normal behavior in Mexico??

BTW..I feel he is a genuinely nice person and has good intentions (for the most part).

It is true that people in Mexico, as a general cultural trend, are more comfortable with physical contact than Americans. However, just like here, pinching someone on the bottom is considered inappropriate in polite company. It's also more common in Mexican culture to express your like for something/someone with words, so I'd say that the "bonita" and "sexy" comments are a pretty good indication that he likes you. (In Mexico, if one doesn't like something, one doesn't talk about it.) I'd say he's probably trying to make passes at you. It sounds like you don't mind, but you might want to let him know that this kind of behavior can be considered sexual harassment and he could get in a lot of trouble.

I'd say that it's probably just the guy's good nature, though it could be something else. I've had a fair share of experience with Latin girls and they're too extremely sweet and don't mind to be touched. I guess that they're just nice by nature, but still don't let your guard down, there are always the odd balls that we need to watch out for.

YES, this is very common in Mexican/Latin/Hispanic cultures! I just finished a course in Sociology 1000. We were discussing sexual harrassment last week. Our professor said that in America, some girls consider it rude for guys to whistle or catcall them. However, he went on to explain that in Spain and Mexico, it's very common for ppl to slap each other's butts and touch each other on the street, even if they don't know each other! It means that they think you're sexy. Most women like this because it gives them more self confidence. In fact, he told us that one of his students just went to Spain. He was upset that no one slapped his butt! ha ha. My prof thot that was interesting. Sexual harrassment and the amount of "appropriate" touching are defined differently in different cultures.

The habits of different cultures sure do cause a lot of misunderstanding and problems. Don't fret. It's normal under his culture but not so much for America.

Wow, deja vu! it truly is not regularly occurring Mexican habit, even with the undeniable fact that it truly is regularly occurring for a guy to act like that if he likes you. Or he ought to easily be very flirtatious (a good type of Mexican adult males are). I worked with a sweet and attractive Mexican guy, yet he wasn't very mushy feely. besides, I loved him, yet reported i'd in no way date him using language barrier. nicely now he's my boyfriend (of 6 months) and that i could not be happier. he's a impressive guy. So do not rule out the concept thoroughly.
