It's funny...such a freedom, or release, as they die. What a wonderful 'send-off' as they are relinquished from duty. What an important job, what a short life...a beautiful, colorful ending to a job well done...only to begin again, in spring.

They are so nice when they bud out in the spring. Without them we would have no shade and the summer would be even more unbearable. In the fall they are beautiful. Then they can once again go back into the ground and become soil. I like evergreen trees and shrubs-green all year! I have lots of leaves but i am not complaining when i get tired of getting them up i will just let them lay there! Finally most of mine have fallen some will stay on the trees until spring.

Leaves from a tree fall in the Autumn to help it survive for the Winter. Survival and rebirth.

The trees, from which the leaves are falling, are trying to survive.

The falling leaves, drift by my window, the falling leaves, of red and gold.
A beautiful old Nat King Cole song.

leaves: Well Rumi one of the greatest poet and Sofi of all times says in one of his versis:

Dari: "Bargay Darakhtanay Sabz... Dar Nazaray Hoshyar..
Har waraqast Dafaraist... Marifatay Kirdigar..."

(Trans, This is my translation and i hope i would try to convey as much of the meaning as i can, understanding that i won't be able to fully convey it)

The Leaves of Green Trees... In the view of those who be wise
Each leaf is diary (Reference) for understanding Allah's (God's) greatness and creativity.

The are one of the most effective and efficient factories and production centers in nature. I read in a report that if humans were to make factories to produce what is produced in a leaf. it will require several city block area. let alone the noise and pollution that will be the by product.

So.. Leaves are a gift and a miricle to Allah's (God's) creation.

That's how i see them...

Leaves represent on a smaller scale the cycle of life. As good as evergreen for a while only to fade away and fall off.
I do not believe God to be my saviour, nor be he my creator. In fact to use this example to justify the prowess of God is mere tautology.

Leaves symoblize change. They grown and die. They turn from green to red. If someone is changing a big aspect of their life, they are, to be cliche, turning over a new leaf. In movies, if things are starting to go wrong (if many people die, or a love is dying between a couple) leaves will fall.

Leaves symbolize life, death, and change.

Leaves falling from trees is a metaphor that describes you perfectly for asking the question.

You're out of your tree!!

Interesting question, as I understand it, leaves are chemical factories, most plants are in a life and death war with insects and animals, the leaves try harder and harder to create chemicals deadly to other "predatory" life forms. The insects/animals adapt to the toxins, and the war never ends...That what you were looking for?
