This is my favorite, but I have a few ~
If someone is acting out of sort, I say....
Have you been hit with an ugly stick?
Others Are;
Don't hide from the past. It won't catch you—if you don't repeat it.
The truth is always stronger than fiction
Never trust a dog to guard your food
All's fair in love and war
You can't learn to swim without getting in the water
The lights are on but there's nobody home
Short pleasures are often long regretted
Sorry, more than a few... I could go on :)

My favorite rule of thumb is the original rule, a law in old England that gave us the expression "rule of thumb"
It used to be illegal for a man to beat his wife or children with anything wider than his thumb.

"Rule of thumb" is a horrible term. It has been linked back to an British Judge named Sir Francis Buller. He is reported to have used the phrase, or something similar to describe the measurement of the size of the stick used by a man to beat his wife, as long as the stick was no thicker than his thumb it was permissible. People should really learn where their phrases come from before they use them. There are other places that this phrase may have come from, but this is the one where the phrase is actually recorded as far back as 1782 and the caricature of "Judge Thumb".

That weird little unspoken one that clearly states that the moment you stub your toe (or bang your thumb), not only is every object/person/random wildlife specimen in the general vicinity mysteriously drawn to it, but you will slam it into things at least 43 times in the first hour.

To live justly and to behave mercifully. (Difficult to follow my own "rule of thumb"!)
