Every day newspaper pages contain reports that point to the collapse of social of social morality, while many regard these developments as merely normal. I would like to know what causes the degeneration of moral values now-a-day?
Does the family? Was the 1950s a good moral era? I think most people would say yes.

Let's see... The 1950's...One of them was the mass production of cars. Cars invented leisure time for youth! Instead having the neighborhood see teens walk to places, teens could now drive to somewhere more private or fun. After WWII, there was a boom in the car industry and everybody was buying cars again.

The mass production of cars allowed ppl to travel farther to work. This created suburbs. In suburbs, u meet a lot more ppl compared to farms, but it's an impersonal relationship. So ppl didn't really build trust or close bonds with many ppl.

Television also became more affordable in the 1950's. I guess movies and tv played a huge role in influencing youth fashion and behavior.

Also, man did Elvis Presley play a huge influence. Rock and Roll was such a sin at the time. Dancing was also considered immoral.

Yes, the 1950's was a good moral era compared to other eras). Check out the tv shows during that time period. Leave it to Beaver, Father knows Best, and the Honeymooners showcased the typical white middle class family that was moral and had no major problems. Look at how they portrayed women back then. All were housewives that listened to their husbands. They spent all day in the kitchen and always wore dresses/skirts with their hair nicely done.

Now, those were just a few of the 1950's. If you want to talk about other decades, there are more. For example, in the 1920's, dance halls were becoming more common. Many people were moving to urban areas to work in factories. So, instead of knowing only a couple ppl around one's farm, one now knows many ppl in the city. Girls could meet guys at work, whereas in the farm, they just married whoever their parents chose. Since teens were making money, boys would take out girls and pay for their meals (usually for their company or sex in exchange) since girls made much less money. The automobile was also invented in the early 1900's (I think) so that more teens could go out, like I stated above. The invention of the radio in the 1920's took away from family time. At the dinner table, families would usually sit around and discuss things. However, with the radio, they would just listen to the radio. Instead of getting only their parents' perspectives, children could listen to perspectives from the radio, form different opinions from their parents, and thus challenge their authority. Also, the 1925 Scopes trial was a trial about the teaching of evolution, which was sort of against a state law. This trial made ppl more interested in evolution. Another one is the downfall of religion. It's less needed nowadays since we have scientists, research, and rational thinking. Furthermore, marraige has been failing. Ppl are no longer very faithful to each other because of many reasons. One, ppl used to marry for economic purposes. Since women have jobs now, they don't depend on men anymore. Two, the downfall of religion. Three, many ppl now marry because of their emotions for each other instead of arranged marraiges long ago. So that means that only two (husband and wife) support themselves in making a marriage work, whereas in arranged marriages, u have the support of the entire family convincing u it will work and helping u in times of trouble. Oh... I could go on and on. Moral degeneration is caused by many things in history. But I'm stopping now. Gotta do stuff. Moral degeneration will continue. It is normal, but that doesn't mean it's good.

P.S.
To Love2be: The hippy culture and other cultures were responses to McCarthyism, which promoted conformity since ppl were scared they'd be seen as communists. All those movements u mentioned were triggered by radical movements before. So I don't think it's plausible to assume that that crazy generation is running our country. Every generation has some "radical" types of countercultures that are responses to already radical movements.

I don't believe our modern era suffers from moral degradation, we are simply more aware of the harsher truths to life. It is doubtful that the people of the 1950s considered the ramifications of sexual and racial inequality, or accepted the truths about child (physical and sexual) abuse, or dreamed that their 'good life' had consequences in the natural world, or thought about the economics of developing nations in the third world. As mentioned, it wasn't a simpler time, they just didn't know any better.

We are still a Stone Age race in a Technological Age, and we are doing the best we can in a time where the world seems to be changing in leaps and bounds...

Most people would agree that the "hippy" generation began the moral degeneration. It was the generation of "self"... love the one you're with... love, not war... peace... burning draft cards... rock 'n' roll music, running to Canada to avoid the draft, etc. The Vietnam war era. Uprisings on college campuses. The more they got away with, the more they pressed on to see what more they could get away with! Now that generation is running the country, ie the liberal press and media, the Democratic party, (mostly), liberal judges in the courts, the ACLU, the "Gay" movement, etc. This, (as anyone with eyes can see), is the beginning of this country's demise... even the world's!

Asking the cause of moral degeneration is assuming that moral degeneration has occurred.

I'd just say that morals have changed--there aren't any standard morals, as they change from society to society, time to time, and spirituality to spirituality (to lack of spirituality--religion isn't the base of all morals, mind you).

Thanks to acceptance, it is progressing nicely.
Moral degeneration is just a perspective issue. More people more media, more publicity of problems. People in the 1950's didn't know any better.

Probably because people are using more curse words now. A lot of kids in my school don't even think sh-t and f-ck are curse words! Also the disgusting music videos and too-sexy lyrics of some artists.
