I have gotten lazy with my old age and send e-cards but I would have to say from making and buying I agree with you making the card also makes it more special because you made them a one of a kind card that is just for them and nobody else.

make it original...make it personal.... get a card that has something on it or in it that your friend can relate to because that is what counts, people like it when you remember stuff about them or about what they like or don't like...
for my friends b-day I got her a card with a green olive on the front and the pimento was in the shape of a heart, the inside said "olive you", the envelope was red...OK the reason for this was to be a smart a$$ because she hates green olives and the color red... it got a great laugh from everyone...but for my other friend I got him a card that had a cartoon camel in a desert with a pyramid in the back ground.. the camel had a speech bubble above it that said "happy birthday, yadda, yadda, yadda, I hope, blah, blah, blah" and on the inside it simply says "WHATEVER".....now the reason for this card is because my friend had visited Egypt a few years ago and really loved it he has picture everywhere and is always talking about it.. plus he says "whatever" ALOT.......well I hope that I was of some help to you good luck and remember so matter what the card says IT'S THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS.... peace

Hmmm. How about you appreciate the friendship. Or, many happy returns of the day. Or you hope that you get to celebrate many more birthdays as friends. Or, do you remember the birthday celebration where we......(fill in the blank).

If you're good friends, you should be able to put something together if you really think about it. You just need a push.
Start off with a joke, or a witty quote:
“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.” - Mark Twain
I think she'll laugh, then finish it off with how much you appreciate being her friend or something along those lines.
-OR- Just stick a joke in there and end it with a "Happy Birthday!"
