Wow, do we differ.
First, while Al Michaels is probably the best play-by-play guy, John Madden is an oaf. He adds NOTHING to a broadcast. Michaels never asks him questions (which may be more of a testament to Michaels' ego than anything), and he does nothing but restate the obvious.
I hate Phil Simms. He has too whispy of a voice and is an all-out apologist for the officials.
Dan Dierdorf has a great TV voice and was a pretty good analyst. But he hated my Bills, so F him.
From what I've read about Bryant Gumbel, he's awful; describing that the runner is running left or right or whatever ... we can SEE that!
My favorite PBP is Joe Buck. He almost perfectly frames everything and lets the game breathe. It's like he knows he doesn't have to be talking ALL the time.
Troy Aikman is the best analyst I've heard on TV since Matt Millen left.
I do want to give a local shout-out to Larry McCarren, the Packers' radio analyst. Everything he says contributes to a broadcast. After almost every play, he'll chip in with a comment about who made a key block on a play, or where a breakdwon occurred that allowed the play to develop as it did. (But he's SUCH a homer, he'll never rise beyond the Packer games.)

If you're a fan of a west coast team forget it. They're all bad. John Madden and Al Michaels are probably the most knowledgeable and try to be the most impartial but still don't succeed at that. Dierdorf and Gumble are the worst.
The best announcers by far do not appear on television. TV announcers are usually ex-NFL coaches or players who can't spit out a sentence and they're almost always still supporting the team that they were affilliated with. I would listen to a local radio announcer any day over a TV commentator.

I love Al Michaels, and really have no respect for any other NFL broadcaster since Howard Cosell (way OLD school reference there). Only for his exaggerated delivery and wacky comments (I believe he was the first on-air announcer to mention the death of John Lennon, during Monday Night Football).
And Dierdorf was a slobbering clown who should have never been handed a mic. I got tired of hearing Sylvester The Cat talk about how the Than Franthithco Forty-Ninerth were going to thlaughter the Thinthinatti Begalth by thix pointh. Yeesh.

Best broadcaster for me personally is John Madden. This is a guy who simply put knows all of the ins and outs of the game. He is so good because first and foremost he is a fan of the game. It wouldn't be football without Madden. Worst for me would deffinatly be Phil Simms. He is such an idiot. It really surprises me that this guy is a Superbowl winning QB because if you listen to him it seems he has never watched a game. Not to mention he is always bias in every game he covers and if Tom Brady is playing its a broadcast full of why Tom Brady is the greatest ever.

Easy. Best: Howard Co-sell. Worst: John Madden.
Madden is why I quit watching football and only watch it with the sound OFF and the radio ON. Fricken MOTORMOUTH on that guy. Shut up and call the action, dammit.

The past decade? Mike Tirico isn't bad. I usually turn down the sound and listen to the radio. All-time BTW, Tom Brookshire and Pat Summerall
