I have been told a friend's PS3 is not able to play regular DVDs, only BlueRay discs. Is this accurate, or is there something wrong with the machine. I haven't seen it for myself, I have just been told this.

PS3s play DVDs just fine. The blu-ray drive reads blu ray disks, DVDs, and CDs. So you should be fine.

Your friend is flat out wrong. The PS3 can play both regular dvds and Blu-ray dvds. The only dvd format it can't play is the HD-DVD.

If his PS3 can't play DVD, then he's got a faulty PS3. The PS3 can play PS2 games, and guess what? PS2 games are in DVD format, and the PS3 is backward compatible, so the PS3 can play DVDs.
