I have discovered that my power supply has gone bad. By having it pluged in to a power strip, the power supply wasent able to send enough power to the computer to load windows.
Just a Heads up
Also I have an EMachines and the power supply are known for being junk.

of course, once the power is turned on, it loads up, on all my old comps, the battery is dead, the only adverse effect it had on the platforms, was the clock was reset every time i shut down the power

Install a new battery. Then enter the Bios Setup upon start up and either select the default values or maybe you can adjust it to what might have been in there before. If nothing is happening when you power up listen for some beeps. Microsoft and the comp maker have a series of beeps to indicate what kind of problem is preventing the start up. Then call your nearest Techno Geek.

what will happen if the battery is flat your bios will not detect the hardware and come up with an error like check sum is wrong.. now what you can do is reset the hardware setting to auto detect the hard drive highlight it and press enter do the same with the cd and floppy drive
then save and it should reboot, if it dose them your puter is ok. all it needs is a new battery. cost $2.00

when you get one you will need to reset up the bios, best to go for the default setting to begin with then take it from there

As long as you have the cover off your computer, look on your motherboard for swollen or leaking capacitors. I'm not saying that this is your problem but bad caps on mine caused it to do some goofy stuff a few months ago. The capacitors look like little cans and should be flat on top. Good luck!
