The problem with one sex is maintaining diversity. Simple organisms can get away with it complex ones generally don't have the reproduction rate for it. I think any complex space aliens would have either multiple sexes or some novel way to mix up whatever passes for a genetic material to maintain their diversity.

I think 3. It would take 2 female sex's and 1 male sex to reproduce. Every time. Every day. And they have to be switched around too or the DNA gets stale. So, at least 3 new sets of 2 female sex's a week. And keep them rotating.
Now I understand why Aliens don't come to Earth.... why the hell would they ever want to leave??

The Kraxnor have four sexes, which makes their Friday night equivalent interesting. Zymofs reproduce by budding and absorbing genetic material from the air that is released by others of their kind going through the shedding stage, they only have one sex. The general rule is two because it is most efficient.

Asexual (One Gender) reproduction is pretty evolutionarily inefficent. Genes are only changed through mutation, like cutting a leaf from a plant and growing another plant from it. It's essentialy the same plant.
Sexual reproduction is basicly the first kind of gene splicing. Half my genes and half my partner's genes combine and reproduce, creating an organism with an entirely unique set of genes, traits and features.
Plus, we all know sex is freakin awesome.
But, honestly, who knows?
Maybe they shoot lazers into eachother's asses and, when their eyeballs shoot out, they scrape them off the target and let a dog eat them and somehow produce offspring like that.
Life is crazy and the Universe is big, it's all possible.

one sex is not sex, since sex means part (from latin sectare=to divide, separate). Thus one sex is not possible. I suspect that 2 or more sexes are possible, (although we have no convincing representatives of either, in our world). Then why the aliens, at least figuratively speaking, wouldn't be entitled to manifest such possibilities in their world?

It really depends on how advanced/primitive the alien organisms are. And if they follow the "Earth-type" setup when it comes to evolution.

since we haven't met any aliens how are we supposed to know that.? on the other hand they can't just multiply mathematically right? they have to have some sort of reproductive system.
