If you really wanna pursue dancing seriously, Ballet is a good start before getting into others. Just because it has the basic steps. You start slow with stances and will give you a great deal of flexibility. I suggest take just basic 1 & 2.
If you know how to dance ballet, you can dance anything else.
The, you can switch to the dances you like. Anything Latin - very sensual.

You might try line dancing in various categories. I took country line dancing and although I am not a fan of this type of music, the dance was a lot of fun.
You can buy tapes of different types of dancing and learn a lot but this doesn't have the influence to stick with it as a studio would have.
Call your local dance studio and ask if they have adult classes. I know you can get into ballet jazz and tap. From there you can go to Modern dance and others.

I think you should learn something you might actually do, unless you're looking at dance as just a form of exercise to do alone or in a studio, rather than for the social aspects. The ballroom you see on TV is entertainment or sport dancing, nothing like what you'd learn in lessons. You might want to consider your end goal before choosing a dance- purely for exercise, for socializing, for nightclub dancing, etc.

u really wanna know ... start with something to get u out of ur two left feet mode ... learn something like TANGO ... it ll teach u how to move urself ... movement control first without doing much up and down and all those tough stuff ... and then venture out in other forms like Jazz or Salsa ... which require you to have some movement control ... one step at a time is what i say ... but i actually feel glad to answer this question .. good to see excitement and willingness to learn when ur old .. i mean adult ... all i say do anything ... u ll feel good ... all the best ....
