You need to get the coorect codec to ba able to play mp3 music. Otherwise an updated version of wmp could do the trick. Currently wmd11 is offered that should do it,the basic free download may be able to do the job, otherwise a need to purchase.

I don't know if this will help but can you right-click on an mp3 file, hover your mouse pointer over "open with" and choose "Windows Media Player"?
Honestly I don't think I've seen any version of WMP that didn't play mp3's...

first check if you have selected -all files(*.*)
go to file menu in media player -open- select the song- chk in 'files of type' box if
'all files(*.*)' is selected. try playing the mp3 file. if this doesn not work
open your windows media player -go to -tools menu- click on options- click on file types option-chk if all formats are selected -click the select all button at the bottom and then save it.
try playing mp3 file. if this doesnot work
download the latest sound codecs form the internet.
for this click on tools menu- click options- click on player tab
-select download codecs automatically in the automatic update option

What version of WMP is yours? By default it should play mp3s without any problem.
