but they still don,t. I have reinstalled windows xp three times in hope of fixing the problem but still no luck. I am just about ready to throw the pc out the back door. I still get two yellow question marks on my usb device and one on other device. I went into the bios and checked and usb is inabled. I formated my hard drive and reinstalled xp again and still can,t get usb to work. The usb plugs are built into my mother board and plug into the back of my pc.I cannot get internet explorer and cannot get on line, as long as those question marks are on the usb. What can i do now, people, besides shooting the pc. Also please keep in mind that i am learning as i go. I have some idea of how to get around on a pc, but its limited, so please keep it simple for a dummie like me. Thanking you all ahead of time because most of you have given me some good help in the past.

It's happened to me, if you've tried the software route to no avail, you might have to accept the same fate that befell mine. In the motherboard as yours...long story short, it fried. Every other part of the board or area that could accept plugins worked fine.

If thats the case with you there are 2 choices. Either do without it or if it's needed you can purchase a usb card to install onto the board. I've seen them with 1,2,4 and even 6 usb ports.

If the usb is badly needed, it's a quick and simple fix, if your MB has an empty card socket to accomodate it. Cost is minimal to reasonable...esp. if that usb port is essential.

I'd surf the web for info b4 proceeding though, perhaps you'll find a possible fix, without forking out some $.

Good luck! If this helps hook me up with an answer from my last Q about windows2000...curse Gates...

What does properties say when you right click on the device with the question mark? If the computer is picking up that the devices are there but not recognizing the devices then your drivers might be missing. Re-installing windows does not load the drivers for your external devices. If that does not work and the system is still under warranty have the motherboard replaced if the USB is integrated. There is a problem with either the settings of the devices and may be just IRQ conflicts.

Try this primary earlier than the unconventional ways prompt. It may be very usual for drives not to get a force letter!: Most most probably the force simply does not have a letter related to it. On the begin menu click on on run Clear something is there and installed compmgmt.msc and hit input In the window that opens there might be a garage phase Choose disk leadership from the garage phase In the backside correct hand phase see if there's a force with out a letter assigned...you would ought to scroll Right click on it after which opt for Change Drive Letters and Paths. Give it a force letter (the field might be clean). You might ought to restart If the force is not indexed in that disk leadership piece, you will have larger issues!

have you tried installing the drivers for the USB. I know when I first start a system, my computer does not recognize the USB ports at USB 2.0. Check the CD for you motherboard, it should have the drivers for that USB.

You said you can't get on line. use Ethernet cable instead of using USB cable, then go to those yellow Mark right click then click on up date. worse come to worse buy USB card and install it, you will get CD with it to install the driver, this is the last resort.
