Because Brazil was colonized by Portugal. Most of the other countries in South and Central America were colonized by Spain, hence they speak Spanish.

I am Brazilian. We speak Portuguese, because the Portuguese discovered Brazil.

Because of Portuguese colonization. They came in, killed off the few Indians that were around and then brought a few million slaves. Then, they all mixed to varying degres and kept on speaking Portuguese.
