I'm a college sophomore pursuing a degree in anthropology/sociology. I would love to combine my interest in the social sciences with my talent for writing. I'd like to know how fellow anthropologists have made a living!

Wow, unlike the last comment, I think you have a fine choice of finding a job. My sister majored in Biological Anthropology, and is now working for a company that does surveying for endangered species before new construction begins. Doesn't sound too exciting to me, but she loves it.

Anthropology degrees give you some diversity...it just depends on what type of anthro you are talking about....biological, cltural, human, etc...

If you do have a sociology degree, you should check with the government. They usually hire people with Soc degrees to do research work, and for some advising positions for upper level government people.

As for entering the military to be a pilot...last time I checked they didn't accept lasix surgery unless the person had been post-surgery for 5 years without any complications. My experiences with lasix is that, even if it is initially successful, the person usually has something go awry within 5 years. BUT, that's only me...not 100% of the people have problems. :-)

II absolutely loved my Cultural and Physical Anthropology classes in college. If I could have majored in Anthropology I would have, but alas, I’m a middle-aged white dude and so I needed a degree that would help me make a living. My instructor, who was female and working on her PhD in Cultural Anthropology was making most of her money teaching 2nd and 3rd grade classes. It is unfortunate but unless you can make money for a company you’re probably not going to get paid much.

There could be a bright side to this. With a minor in Anthropology and a major in Sociology (I’d definitely get my Masters) you may be able to do product field research for some of the companies coming out of China. No, I’m not being a smart ***. In order to market your product safely and effectively you must go into a region and learn about the local inhabitants. I actually got this from my anthropology instructor. What the heck, take a shot. It’s all good.

One last thought; CSI is a really hot topic what with them having three different TV shows and all. Forensics is nothing more than physical anthropology and what with the sociology degree you may be a perfect fit for law enforcement. Just a couple of ideas.

It doesn't seem to be too many, careers that can come from such an education. I did know of some with a degree in theology , working as a social worker .

They both give you lots of time to look for a real job because no one will pay you for those degrees. You could always look to the government for a job. They will hire you just for having a degree. You could look at the Air Force. If you have good vision (and anybody can get that fixed by laser correction these days) and an aptitude for math, you could become a pilot of our latest and greatest fighter airplanes. A guy who got my same degree a few years earlier than I did became a pilot. I have a degree in Education, but I never taught. Today's kids aren't worth the effort...
