In my hometown it is great! I live in MN. There is a 'special' box at the local post office for the Santa Letters to the North Pole....and then they will postmark the letter so you get the North Pole postmark. Then volunteers write and respond to EVERY child letter (I guess they'd respond to an adult letter too...) and send the letter back with the letter the child wrote to show them that Santa read the letter...the put a 'nice' stamp on the child's letter to show that they were on Santa's nice list and not the naughty list. I was so excited as a child when I got my letter back from Santa. A local actor in town who knows practically everyone will then come play Santa on Saturdays. The kids eyes light up when Santa knows their name and tells them he knows they've been nice that year. This is a small town so they take a little more liberty...not sure it could be pulled off in a large town or city but what they did when I was growing up made writing a letter to Santa more magical, Happy Holidays!

The post office cannot create an envelope for you. However the post office myself and my husband work at takes care of Santa letters to kids. When the carrier picks up a Santa letter, or one is mailed at the counter some of the employees answer the letter and send it back out before Christmas. The employees buy the stationary it is written on.Its pretty realistic. Of course we live in a smaller town so its not like there's 100's of letters coming in.

It depends on the individual office. Some throw them away and some answer them. They leave it up to the Post Master to decide what to do with them. Alot of them now forward them to organizations that answer them, like St.Judes or non-profit org. like them. It was on a program on the discovery channel last year.
