I know the answer is 3.2, but how do I explain it to my daughter so she can use the principle on similar problems? I feel like an idiot.

1st of all u want to distribue the eight and the (4-y)....wat i mean by this is that you mutilply the 8 and the (4-y) together. after this you get the y to both side then you divide by the number next to y...ill show u

1) 8(4-y)=2y
2) 32-8y=2y
3)32-8y+8y=2y+8y
4) 32=10y
5)32/10=10y/10
6)3.2=y

There is a rule called distributive property that says if you have a number sitting in front of a set of parentheses, you should multiply that number by each term in the parentheses.

So that means you would make it (8*4)-(8*y)=2y.

Then you simplify (work out) the left side to get 32-8y=2y.

To get y= something, you need to have all your y's on one side of the equation. so you subtract 8y from each side and get 32=10y. .

Then you will divide both sides by 10 so that you can have 1y=something.

So: you will have 1y= 32/10 which is the same as 3.2 or 3 1/5

First you need to expand the left side of the equation. Multiply 8 through the (4-y) and come up with 32-8y=2y. Next, add 8y to each side of the equation and you get 32=10y. Finally, divide each side by 10 and you get your answer, y=3.2.

dear me...

ok... first tell her to remember MOB - multiply out the brackets!

Thats always the most important thing to do first.

so 8 x 4 = 32 and 8 x y = 8y

so you get 32 - 8y = 2y

then... you need to get all the letters on one side of the = sign so...

seeing as you have to do the opposite you have to + 8y to move it to the other side meaning you get

32 = 10y

and then of course you simply divide by 10 to get what y is on its own

so 3.2 = y

i'm only 17 so hopefully i'll have explained it in an easyish way? =)

don't feel like an idiot!

first you have to get rid of the parentheses around the 4-y. to do that you multiply each factor inside the parentheses by 8. so now the problem looks like:

32-8y=2y

the next step is to put the "y"s together...on the right side 8y is subtracted so to get rid of that you ADD 8y to the right side and whatever you do to one side you have to do to the other...so you add 8y to 2y...so now the problem looks like:

32=10y

now since 'y' is multiplied by 10 on the right side you have to do the oppositeto get rid of the 10 so to do that...you divide both sides by 10...now you should get...

y=3.2

Show it to her like this

8(4-y)=8*4-8*y.
32-8y=2y
+8y +8y
32=10y
/10 /10
y=3.2

Well, you can explain the property (I forget the name) that allows you to multiply the number outside the parantheses by each number inside the parantheses, so the left side of the equation becomes 32-8y. Next you can explain that whatever you do to one side you have to do to the other side so the equation will balance. You're going to add 8y to the -8y to get rid of it on the left side, so you're also going to add 8y to the 2y on the right side to get 10y. Now you're left with 32=10y, so you are going to divide both sides by 10 to get the answer.

ok, you have to multiply like this,
8*4-8y=2y
32-8y=2y
you have to multiply like that because when you have parentheses, you work inside then outside. since there is nothing you can do inside, then you have to get rid of the parenthese by multiplying both numbers inside by 8.
Then you have to put the ys together so,
32 -8y +8y=2y+8y
32=10y
then divide both sides by 10 to get the y alone

1.) distribute the 8 to eveything in the ( ). The rule is always distribute to everything to the every thing in the parenthasis when it is butted up like that.
so thats 32-8y=2y
2. now take the -8y to the other side as a poitive (because thats the rule when you take something to the opposite side you take the recriprical (opposite) I remember my teacher always saying "the y's (or x's or whatever)are friends and always want to hang out together so get em to the same side so they can be with their friends.
so now you have 32=10y
3. divide by 10 on both sides
y=3.2

bob's your uncle

easy enough?

8(4-y)=2y
32-8y=2y
32=2y+8y
32=10y
32/10=10y/10
3.2=y
thats every step taken to solve the question. Taking things bit by bit is the best way to explain it.
