According to mystical lore...Silver is a metal that has associations with the moon and lunar energy. That bing the case, since the transformation of Werewolves took place at the full moon, only a metal with associations with that power COULD have any effect on the creature. ALL the silver did was to allow the bullet to actually make contact with the creature, thus shooting it with a silver bullet was like shooting anyone else with a regular bullet. The lunar magic of the silver would interact with the lunar power of the creature and you have, death. Any other metal (gold, lead, etc.) would simply pass harmlessly through the creature.

Silver was a metal associated with purity. Having something pure like silver kill a beast as unpure as a werewolf would only be natural as the legend grew. Eventually they added the pentagram, the whole lore about taking the werewolf's place if you killed him, the part about the index finger being longer than the middle finger and other bits and pieces to the legend. Each story or movie seems to add a little more or change a little just like the vampire legends do. And its not the silver bullet alone that will kill a werewolf. According to lore, it has to be dipped in holy water.

I'm only guessing, but I'd assume silver contains some mystic property in ancient myths and legends due to its shiny nature. Also, because it's light and similar to gold (sometimes called "white gold", I believe) but stronger, that might lead to the belief that a silver bullet kills a werewolf. When one thinks of it, silver is valued almost as highly as gold (sometimes even higher), yet gold is too soft (especially PURE gold) to make a very useful bullet, whereas silver - like lead, copper, or steel, to name a few other metals - is solid enough to make a bullet.

it is a proven fact you cannot shoot a silver bullet unless it had the silver content that of silver sodder, silver has a very low melting point and it very soft, this is why lead is usually jacketted and mixed with other materials to retain itself to an extent. Go in Christ

It is according to legend that it works. Perhaps it is the metal of the moon. They are allergic to it, and that is why they are so susceptible to it. I am sure that beheading would also kill them. Just takes all kinds, I suppose.
