I am getting a associate in applied science degree (photographic imaging). Do I need a bachlor in journalism as well to become a photojournalist. When you are a photojournalist do you take the picture and write the story?

I'm not sure where you live but in Australia I don't think so. If you have the photo degree that is about all you need. If you do do Journalism I guess it can only help but having done that course it didn't really cover photography.

More than likely, no you don't write the story that goes with the photo. They usually send you out with a reporter. If you do have to write one though it usually isn't of a in depth manner. That's about the only time a photographer needs a degree.

Just remember - a photo tells a thousand words - that is your story.

I would say that internships are probably more important to someone in your position than a journalism degree. Then, you have proof to any newspaper that you have work samples.

At my college you must be a journalism major just to take photojournalism classes, but I know people with fine arts degrees who work as news photographers. Now if you want to shoot video footage, that's a different story.

Photojournalists don't write the stories. They work with the writer to capture a photographic image that tells the story the author has written.

No, you don't need a journalism degree, although it would help. Photojournalists do not write stories.

If you work for a small-town newspaper as a reporter, you will probably take the photos yourself.
