use the two runningback system like what the saints have? it's working out pretty well for them. someone to bruise defenders with raw power and someone who is dangerous anytime he gets the ball.

It depends on who you have on your team....The Saints have two great backs this year and its working out for them. But look at them in years past...its just been Duece and it still worked our well for them with the exception of last year....it just depends on the depth at that position.

It depends on the system. some teams use one premier back because he is very versitile, and won't give away what you are trying to do.
other system they have specialist running backs, the saints put in Duece McAllister when they will run the ball up. Reggie bush is put in when they want to run outside the tackles. so when teams see McAllister they tend to creep the line, when Bush come in, they usually will zone the flats.

but it won't work unless you have the right personel. last year the niners ran a 2 back system (Barlow and Gore) and almost every time the ball was given to one of those backs, they were stoped at the line. Barlow was traded to the Jets and look at what Gore has been doing now.

not enough good backs available, the redskins sort of do with clinton portis, and ladell betts, the falcons do in a way with dunn and norwood, altho they are more fast and faster, but remember it doesnt always work out, remember thunder and lighting from New York? probably not which is exactly my point, Tiki Barber and Ron Dayne couldnt co exist because while he is a great guy Tiki needs the ball alot to be effective, not to call him a ball hog or anything, thats just his style, the more he gets the ball the better he is, it all depends on the personalities of the guys, so far McAllister hasnt gotten fed up with losing touches, hes sacrificing for the good of the team, theres a lot of prima donnas in the NFL that wouldnt do that

The running back by committee approach has a few success stories but more failures. There is a lot to be said about a running back getting enough carries to find their rhythm. Also, those defenders can still take bruising from raw power fullback, tight end, and lineman blocking.

It is hard to aquire two decent and reliable runningbacks like Bush and McCallister. Also, it is hard to convince the average multi-million dollar superstar runningback that he needs to share his workload, thus potentially give up yardage, carries, and touchdowns to someone else.

Other teams like the NY Giants, Cowboys, Patriots, and Bears, do share the duties of running back between players, so the Saints are not anything special here.

Because most teams don't have 2 good running backs that can run, catch and block. The Saints are blessed.
