So we can say that our main unit for measuring time is one year. Each year can be cut up into smaller pieces too. If we cut it into 365 pieces we call each piece a day. 365 days is one year. Each day is cut up into 24 pieces called hours. Each hour is cut up into 60 pieces called minutes and each minute is cut up into 60 pieces called seconds. So we can think of each hour as a group of 60 minutes. When we want to write 356 minutes in hours what we need to know is how many groups of 60 minutes can we make out of a giant package of 356 minutes. Now we need to use division to find out. 60 into 356 will go 5 times but not 6 times. 5X60=300, thats OK because 300 is less than 356. 6X60=360 and is not OK because its too big to fit into 356 so we will use 5X60 and have some minutes left over. 5X60=300. For the second part of the question. How many minutes are there in 3 hours and 10 minutes all we have to remember is that there are 60 minutes in each hour and we have 3 hours so, 3X60=180. There are 180 minutes in 3 hours. Now add the extra 10 minutes to the 180 minutes we got out of the 3 hours and we have a total of 190 minutes. 3 hours and 10 minutes is the same as 190 minutes. Because you can get three 60 minute hours out of 190 minutes and have 10 extra minutes left over.
