I like the answers here...lots of heart and everyone loves defense.
The reason defense wins championships is because offense is about trying to move ahead. All Defense has to do is prevent that.
In order for offense to move ahead, steller players have to take enormous risks: run far, run tight, throw far, keep the ball and turn up field...
all defense has to do is prevent that.
As long as defense prevents advancement; their offense gets a chance to move the ball.
Defense meanwhile has two other dangerous tricks: we can score and we can injure key players.
Come the end of the season you have more injured players playing, more inexperienced players playing, and everyone taking huge risks...
and all defense has to do is prevent forward progress...
AND
- we can score
- and sometimes people taking risks get hurt.

Because the playoffs is the best teams in the league. There is no more just dominating teams. Playoff games tend to be close because both teams have really good offenses and really good defenses. The team that usually wins is the team that has the slight advantage on defense, hence why teams emphasize on defense come playoff time.

Defense TRUELY wins championships. The regular season gives teams an opportunity to see and come up with a strategies to stop potent offenses. So now if a defense can cause an offense to do something they normally don't do....ie ....throw the ball 20+ more times than normal.....the odds that a defense will capitalize on an offenses mistakes increases.

Good defense gives your offense more opprotunities to have the ball. Good defense also limits the number of points the other team can put up. If you look at the last few Super Bowl winners, most of them have been great defensive teams with an acceptable offense, 05 Steelers, 04 Patriots, 03 Patriots, 02 Bucs, 01 Patriots, and 00 Ravens all fit this mold.

Its much easier to dismantle a good offense than it is to pick apart a good defense, and also a good defense makes your offense better, gives them the ball more, better field position occasional scoring on picks and fumbles, but lets not forget, how many games are won on the Kickers foot.

Because in the playoffs every-ones trying a lot harder to score on you. They can see the championship is close and they get psyched. If you can stop the other team from scoring they will lose moral and it will create opportunities for you to score.

Defense is more dependable. There is consistency in big games with defense, while the offense is more likely to choke, or be impacted by the weather.
