The Maya still exist, I am pretty sure... I mean I exist and I am Mayan so I guess we are still around... wow, almost metaphysical there... I actually got yelled at by a history professor for using past tense to describe the Mayan city builders because “The Mayan people still exist!!!”. She was a bit red in the face when I explained my Bloodlines hehe. Anyhow…
The (old) Maya were predominately in the Yucatan peninsula, west to east the empire stretched from the Pacific to the Caribbean. North to South it went from the southern portions of Mexico all the way to Honduras.
Now the Mayan Empire is a bit of a misnomer, it was made up of several City states each with its own independent Governments; It was in many ways like the Greeks.
However today most Maya live in Guatemala, El Salvador, northern Honduras, and Belize; there is also a tiny population in southern Mexico. The Maya have been in a long drawn out conflict with the Guatemalan government who had been trying to wipe them out for several decades.
Just a side note the Maya are also not predominantly a Tribe, they are more like loose family groups. Not trying to be PC or anything, just want to give you the correct info.
