Carol of the Bells started out as "Shchedryk," an Ukrainian winter well-wishing folk song by Mykola Dmytovych Leontovych first performed in 1916 and introduced to the United States in 1921. The song's name comes from the Ukrainian word, "Shchedriy," meaning "bountiful." It is traditionally sung on 13 January, the eve of the Julian New Year.

The English lyrics and adaptation were written in 1936 by Peter Wilhousky, a composer for NBC studios for whom the tune reminded him of the ringing of bells.

Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych, a Ukrainian composer.

"Carol of the Bells" was taken from "Shchredryke," one of his compositions. It was performed for the first time a little before the 1920's I believe.

Hope this helps; music history class back in high school was good for something. :)

It's Russian, I believe. Some guy like Weilinski or another hard to spell last name.

It's really quite lovely, isn't it? It's just hard to make myself do that last Ding Dong Ding Dong in the alto part. I have to practice more!
