Toronto is the center of the arts. Traditionally around Queen street which is close to The Ontario Collegue of Art and Design.
Also check out 80 Spidina in the corner of Queen and Spadina.
In Yorkville there are many art galleries too.

The artsists community has one bad side effect Gentrification.
Prices for real estate rent and even a beer in a bar have skyrocketed since Queen street became popular in the early eighties.
The artists community in Toronto is really pretentious. They speak a lot of Postmodern jargon. If you're not hip according to their standards you will be ignored. I personaly prefer the company of outsider artists myself. I think conseptual artists are a joke. Most of them can't draw they're way out of a plastic bag.
They try to accomidate for that by jumping on the bandwagon to some trendy issue.

In Toronto there are also art communities in the Junction, Roncesvalles, the Wallace/Dundas west area as well as the East End. The Gallery I show with is in the east end of toronto where there is an emerging scene. Get yourself onto an art info list like akimbo or instant coffee. also check out 401 Richmond.
There is a lot of art happening outside of what is described as the gentrified queen west area. I'm a painter but I know conceptual artists who choose to make conceptual work but are very capable of drawing or realism of whatever people value, In fact it is a very bougie and gentry attitude to value decorative or technically impressive work over work with a conceptual basis. you don't have to be pretentious to contribute to art in toronto, to dismiss toronto art on this basis hinders art in canada.

Muskoka and Haliburton both have thriving artists communities, Muskoka's Autumn Studio Tour is the first of its kind, now they all seem to have them. Farther East, Merrickville comes to mind as well.
