I dont know how many, exactly.. but I used to work at a weight loss clinic, and we had to make sure the mothers were eating an average of 300-500 extra calories per day if they were breastfeeding and doing the weight loss program at the same time. They always lost weight quicker than the other mothers, despite the fact that they were eating 500 extra calories!! It must burn at least 500 calories, or the diet couldnt have worked..

An average of 500 calories a day, assuming that you are breastfeeding several times a day (between 3 and 10 times, a half hour a piece).
But you're going to be that much more hungry... I couldn't lose weight until I stopped breast feeding because I was just ravenous when I was breastfeeding.
Good luck! It's tough stuff, but really people are very understanding about your extra weight following a preganancy. My baby's 1 1/2 years old, and people freak out when I say I've lost 30 lbs. It's all good. :) You're beautiful just because you're a mommy.

I have read before that a breastfeeding mom should take in an extra 500 calories a day so I assume you could burn up to that many.

will give you a diet plan and how many more calories you should be eating based on your weight and height.
Typically they add 200 -300 more calories than when you were pregnant! :) (don't forget the 200 you already added while pregnant)

some booklet i got in the hospital after i delivered my baby said 500 calories a day.
