Perhaps you should take your inability to come up with a "good argument" against gay marriage as a BIG clue to what the answer is.
There simply is NO logical, non-religious basis for a government to deny a class of people rights that other classes of people have. All men are equal; some are more equal than others....
Since many people have an issue with the "Marriage" portion of Gay Marriage, my solution to the issue is simple. Strip the word "marriage" from civil unions and call *ALL* pair-bonds a "Civil Union". Marriages can still be performed and "recognized" by churches, but as far as the government is concerned, they're a Civil Union.

WHY are you asking this question in the " Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered " section ????????? You 'say' you dont hate gay people, but yet you "destest homosexuality".....there's really NO difference in the two, you know.
"Zimmiesgrl" says this: " I understand that this is something so common these days...a woman and a woman together for years or a man and a man living together. So think about it, what if one of them die? They have no right to the others property even if they played house all of those years. A man and a woman don't even have to have a ceremony and after "X" amount of years depending on the state laws, they are recognized as a married couple. Also, health insurance. I have health insurance because of my husband's job. If there were 2 lesbians in a serious committed relationship, they would not have that same entitlement. Also, what about child custody? with homosexuals there's a lot that's unfair. They should have some sort of protection. They need to have something recognized by law....but I think it should only be done for legal purposes...mainly. "
................... Now, isn't 'this' mainly what gays & lesbians are fighting FOR !? That's all we're asking for..."rights".... " entitlements ".... is 'that' so horrible ?!?! We're not asking for rights to go out in public and freely "make out", or cause 'scenes' with eachother........that's not what being in a gay or lesbian relationship is 'about'.

The answer is...
...the government shouldn't.
Those who oppose gay marriage claim that it defies the sanctity of the institution of marriage. Well, sanctity smacks an awful lot of "church" and the federal, state and local governments have no say in church affairs.
These same bodies DO have a say in civil unions but there are mechanisms in place that protect people from the government depriving them of equal rights and the pursuit of happiness.
Look, any gay couple can go and get married in a church as long as that church supports it. What they can't get is a marriage license. And they shouldn't need one. They need a civil union license. As do all who wish to marry. Any government body issuing marriage licenses has stepped beyond its boundaries.
It's all in the terminology. Call it a marriage license and the government can call shenanigans by playing the "sanctity of marriage" card. Call it a civil union and they can't because of equal rights and the Constitution. So lets get the terminology right and all this will work itself out.
Gay or straight, that license you have can't be a marriage license as marriage is holy (at least to those playing the sanctity card) and should be left to the church. It is a civil union license and the government can't discriminate against a group by not allowing them the same opportunities and advantages as any other group.

You may have a hard time coming up with a good answer because there simply isn't one. You can be against something with all your being but still recognize a person's right to be for it. And the fact remains that there is no good reason why two consenting adults should not be granted the same rights as any other two consenting adults just because it happens to be against your beliefs. Bring any argument into it, and there is a counter argument that is just as strong or even stronger.
One argument gay marriage opponents have is that it isn't fair to bring children into such a relationship. Well, that happens anyway--gay couples are adopting and having children naturally. Making gay unions legal protects the rights of the parents and allows the children to live with the non-birth parent should the birth parent die. And poverty, abuse, and ignorance are far greater predictors of adult problems than being raised by loving parents, no matter what their sexual preference.

A man and a woman should only have a recognizable marriage in the eyes of the law. However, homosexuals should have the right to some type of union...but it shouldn't be called marriage. I understand that this is something so common these days...a woman and a woman together for years or a man and a man living together. So think about it, what if one of them die? The truth be told, you asked why the GOVERNMENT should deprive gay couples of their right to marry, and your own answer is correct.
It's a LEGAL right, not a religious one in this country. There are over 1,300 rights, laws, protections and privileges encompassed within LEGAL Marriage. These rights and laws are denied to gay couples out of some sanctimonious BS.
Our country was NOT founded on "Christian" values or principals. It was founded on the idea that ALL men are Created EQUAL. ALL not some, not just white, not just rich, not just better educated, not just straight...ALL!
I am staunchly opposed to any union not legally equal in ALL aspects INCLUDING it's label. LEGAL MARRIAGE is a SECULAR institution NOT a religious one.
The word has more meanings than it's religious ties, just look it up.
As a NATION we allow atheists, rapists, murders, thieves, liars, fornicators, adulterers, people who beat others, people of all races, religions, education levels, income levels, ages above legal consent....to legally marry!
The ONLY group who is still denied this LEGAL RIGHT are committed same sex couples.
This is such a blatant act of discrimination and hypocrisy that it's simply unthinkable that in THIS country we still can't see what we're doing.

So, should we deprive heterosexuals of the same rights and privileges that all humans should be entitled too just because I detest heterosexuality? Just because I was born of heterosexuality doesn't mean I have to like it or agree with it, does it?
When the government and the church gets out of people bedrooms that is when humans can truly live free!
My oh my, the bible is just a book written by man how in the world can you take it so literal? Remember it is just a work of fiction! An allegation that a fact exists that is known not to exist, made by authority of the church can then be construed as fact. Get real!

I personally think that there is no reason that we shouldn't be able to marry. I believe that when you fall in love no matter what the gender you should be able to marry.I wish I could marry my girlfriend and live a normal life like any other heterosexual.I love the same way as they do so why not be able to marry. God also said in the bible though shall not judge and God made everyone and if he didn't want same sexes to fall in love he wouldn't have made les or gays. Plus God loves everything and everyone.I should be able to marry my gf because i love her the same way a women loves a man and we live exactly the same too, we want to spend the rest of our lives together and raise our children to be productive human beings just like any other paren'ts in this world. We arent any different.

Why not ban all non-Christian Marriages? Why allow atheists to marry? Why Allow Jews? Muslims? Pagans? Hindus? the list goes on and on. Marriage is not just for Christians you know. It's a right given by the government not God.

no. I think they should be able to do WHATEVER they want. How is it hurting you by them becoming one through marriage? who is anyone else to tell other people they are wrong because of what sex they are attracted to. I am a straight woman married to a straight man, and i have NO problem with it. Maybe if you cant find a reason then there really isnt one.
