Everybody was classified by their age. All of the Eleven year olds (including Jonas) were classified together.

It's how they categorize children in their society. Much the same way we refer to a student in the fifth grade as a fifth grader, except since the community is so small Eleven becomes a proper noun since there is only one group or Elevens at any one time.

In the story, the Utopian Society views people like numbers. It is a sign of your status in society and also his age. He is an eleven and the numbers can gauge when they graduate, etc.

i read this a long time ago. if i remeber correctly it was the way he was brought up. the city controled his thought and his beliefs for the most part. if u were raised and tought that you were a god u would believe it until u met someone else or got arrested :). there were strict tules of conformity among the utopia that had to be followed. it was a way of life for jonas. one of the reasons he left.

because thats the way they do things. im sure they would think it was weird we say 11 years old.
