The Haight District has stayed pretty nice, it's clean, the flats there are super expensive, and the area is pretty safe at night. I'm a woman, and I've NEVER felt uncomfortable there at night.
Haight street is a mixture of expensive boutiques, head shops, used clothing stores, and tattoo shops. It's dirty, but not run down. The only stores there that I still enjoy are the Anarchist Bookstore, and Amoeba Records. There are a lot of kids hanging out the the streets, mostly the Richmond District (rich kid slummin') gutter punks, but they're harmless.

It's a bit more commercial then in the 60's 70's. There are lots of boutiques, cheap restaurants, and funky gift places.
It's not run down but I wouldn't say it is "nice" either.
Go for it and walk around there but I like neighborhoods like the Castro, Hayes Valley. And Fillmore street is really lead back. It's a great place to have coffee and people which.
ps I like in SF...

It is still a place were young people hang out. It's not run down but there are a lot of pan handlers and homeless people hanging out there. Drugs can still be found here. I would NOT say it is a yuppie area at all. Only the real estate is expensive like all of SF. There are some great music stores like Amobra and lots of thrift shops and smoke shops.

It has a very hippie turned yuppie kind of feel. Still lots of cafes, boutiques and stuff, but expensive. There are used clothes stores and the music stores too that are nice. Some parts look run down but over all its not bad

It's a bit grungy for my taste, but I like to go there if I want to buy offbeat gifts or if I want to check out the latest in vintage and second-hand clothes. It's a funky, fun area to go to with good, reasonably-priced restaurants. Just be a little bit street smart with the homeless kids hanging around, although they generally mind their business.

I guess you could describe it as "hip" or "trendy" ... I only see it as yuppie, with quite a few throwbacks to the 60s.
Not that that is a bad thing ... just not my cup of tea. Plenty of folks find it very charming.

It's nice. They added a Gap just recently. But it hasn't lost it's unique flair.
