i guess not, but I wouldn't do that. Especially if it is for your wife. She will probably want something from your heart.

It depends. If you do a cop out - say, a Wal-Mart or other general card - then yes. If, however, you choose a store or service that your spouse likes, and put some thought into it, perhaps write a little note to go with it, then no. For example, if my husband were to get me an iTunes card, I would know he thought about it - I am a music junkie, and I listen to some really bizarre, eclectic stuff. So it would be a great, thoughtful gift for him to give me - letting me enjoy it for a long time as I got to pick and choose what I wanted. If he handed me one of those gift Visas, though, I'd probably get angry. That's basically saying "I didn't even bother to think about getting you a gift, go buy your own." The other thing is with a general gift like that I would know that it would wind up being spent on the groceries, clothes for kids, or whatever, and not necessarily for me.

Bottom line, gift cards, when used correctly, are as thoughtful a gift as anything else. Only give general gift cards in lieu of cash - for example, Cousin Andy's graduation, your Niece's baby shower - never in a situation where you wouldn't give cash. Otherwise, be as specific as possible, and enclose a personal note, if distance allows offer to go along on the excursion if you want. This can be as simple as "I know you love to cook, but I didn't know which gadget would make your kitchen perfect, or which cookbook has the perfect recipe. Let's go find out!" on a kitchen store card, or as long as you want it to be. In a lot of cases, the recipient will treasure that note or the time spent with you as much as or more than the gift.

I wouldn't say rude, necessarily. But you have to ask yourself whether it's thoughtful.

In my case, I would love for my husband to give me a gift card so I could buy some new clothes for work after the holidays. But I would be happier if he added to it with some thoughtful extras---a "coupon" good for a foot rub when I get home from the mall, or a promise to go with me and carry my packages and help me decide on things and take me to lunch.

And it would mean a lot to me if he remembered something I had admired, and said on the card, "So you can buy that cashmere sweater at Macy's, or something that you like even better." That would tell me that he's paying attention, but chose the card instead of the sweater to accomodate me.

To be honest with you that's what my husband wants is a gift card. I can never pick out a good gift for him so a gift card is perfect for me to get him. It's just like me, I buy my own Christmas present from him.

i don't guess so, but make certain you give them something else as well to show that you put a little thought into a gift for them. Sometimes it is easier, and sometimes the receiver prefers a gift card that way they don't get an ugly sweater, or whatever, but they will appreciate knowing that you really thought about them and what they like.

I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

I would rather give a gift card & have the recipient get whatever they want... I think it is rather thoughtful!

it would be nice, not as nice as cash, but nice. It would save time not having to hit the return lane at Home Depot

Last year some guy in front of me was returning wood cuz the planks were too long
