Yes file a police report by all means. Being a law enforcement officer for thirty years, I would suggest you contact someone you know with the local authorities there where you live first. If the rape occurred in another location they will need to have the information, etc, so they can contact the jurisdiction where it occurred. Depending on the circumstances, where it occurred, what type environment, etc., you may have had witnesses, evidence of the suspect, a picture, etc. Dont give up, if it truly happened, no matter how long ago, have the victim report it! There is a thing called the Statute of Limitations. In some cases it is continued, like in child sexual assault!

An issue with a grown woman is usually after a rape there is physical evidence which is collected at a hospital! I suppose if the statutes had not run out (Usually 7 years, depending on state) and you had several witnesses you might get someone charged!

Just how are you going to announce it? If you tell the cops OK, if you announce it like news, you better be able to prove it when you get sued for slander!

When the crime has not yet prescribed, the offender could still be charged in court. Thus, the crime of rape could still be announced after a few years as long as it can be proven by evidence as allowed by the Rules of Court.

Not too late, but incredibly difficult to prove. No DNA evidence. It's a he-said-she-said, and it's hard to get a conviction baed on that. That doesn't mean it's not worth the fight and could even be healing for you in some way. On the other hand, your reputation could be drug through the dirt too. But I think it'd be worth the fight for the sake of the fight and for truth, regardless of the outcome.

No, its never too late. Whether anything can be done depends (generally speaking) on the statute of limitations of that crime for your state. Never the less, the matter needs to be reported. If not for your protection perhaps for the protection of a future victim.

It varies state to state. It's never too late to go to someone to get help to deal with the rape. However, I believe there is a statute of limitations or some such thing....you'd have to check your with your state.

Chelsey,
I cetainly hope this has Not happened to you.
However, I would report it regardless as to how long ago it was. Let the Authorities decide if they can do something about it.
Good luck, I hope the scum gets Nailed !!!

Varies by state (see link). But even if it's too late to prosecute, the hope is that by telling you can prevent it happening to someone else.

I think there is a seven year time frame to file in criminal court (statute of limitations) not sure about civil. You could talk to an attorney about suing.

I think you can still report it, maybe if the same person was a serial rapist it might make a difference. Maybe not.
