The Lost Boys is set in a contemporary setting, i.e. the period of the movie is the period of its filming - the early 1980's.
The film was released in 1987, and filmed in the mid 1980's.
The filming was done in real Santa Cruz at that time (including a scene in the comic shop with two friends of mine who own the comic shop where the Frog brothers hang out...). The city was originally to be called Santa Cruz until the chamber of commerce (in their infinite stupidity) sued - resulting in the name Santa Carla.
Everything in the film is contemporary 1986 Santa Cruz, from the opening where they pass the sign (don't know if its still there), to the Boardwalk (including the parking area where the security guard gets snatched) to the train trestle (faked in the film...).
The styles, language, behavior, the whole kit and kaboodle is mid 1980's Santa Cruz California.

I love that film!
It was released in 1987, as a "stylish, with-it horror-comedy" that would show "vampirism at its hippest, funniest, scariest." Think I'm kidding? Note Corey Feldman's haircut and jacket. Oh, yeah. Both hip and scary! :)
It was meant to be a "roughly now" movie at the time. Reading the soundtrack artists really confirms that - INXS, Jimmy Barnes, Lou Gramm, Echo and the Bunnymen...
Didn't you ever think that Grandpa might actually be a sort of vampire himself? Special room, special root beer, lots of dead animals for the taxidermy...and he knew about the vampires...just one of my family's pet theories for one of our favourite films.
That's what makes a good movie, though - it has a world you can believe and imagine what's beyond the edges. Good luck on your imaginings!
