Hip-Hop is generally more political and focuses on word play rather than the beat. Most hip-hop artists aren't what you would consider "popular." But the blend of hip-hop and rap music has become more prevalent these days with artists like Kanye West combining both genres.
Rap is definitely the more popular style of music between the two. This is the loud bass blaring, thug mentality music you hear on most "rap" stations. Rap focuses more on the beat and is very popular in clubs and party scenes. Artists like Lil Scrappy, Ludacris and Twista are all considered "rap."

Well, that is partly true. HOWEVER, rap is not singing...it's just some guy mumbling really fast saying words that rhyme. Hip-hop is when you actually sing, and there mgiht be some parts of rap in it.
